How Resistence Training Can Help You To Lose Weight Faster

A while back, I took a long hard look at myself and realized: I need to lose weight. This chubby body of mine is not going to keep working for me anymore. It took me a little while to get the nutrition side of things right. I knew that if I wanted to see steady weight loss results I needed to combine my healthy eating habits with exercise.

I do a lot of cardio, but I also do resistance training because it helps me burn calories and keeps my body strong.

Benefits of Resistance Training

If you’re really trying to lose weight, resistance training is so important because it increases the amount of lean muscle mass in the body. Why is this important? Because every pound of muscle you have accelerates the rate your  body burns fat.

There are so many ways to get resistance training. You can use dumbbells, weight machines, water bottles, soup cans and resistance bands. You can also use your own body weight as resistance by doing pushups, lunges, pull ups, squats and the like.

i need to lose weightIf you do only cardio exercises, your metabolism slows down as soon as your workout is over. When you also do resistance training, your metabolism stays up long after your workout is over—even when you’re resting.

If you still don’t believe that resistance training is important for weight loss, think about this. If two women are the same weight and height, and one of them has a body that’s mostly muscle, and the other woman’s body is flabby, the woman with the lean muscle will look smaller. Why? Because muscle is compact and takes up less space in the body than fat.

I Don’t Want to Get Bulky

Some women shun the idea of resistance training because they have unrealistic fears of getting bulky. Most of the people who get husky either train specifically to gain bulk (professional bodybuilders for example) or they take performance-enhancing drugs.

General strength training is not, I repeat, is not going to make you bulky. The only thing it will do is make you stronger, leaner and shapelier. Isn’t this what you want?

Tips for Effective Resistance Training

  • Do resistance training three times a week. Don’t overdo it. When you strength train, your muscles need time to recover. Ideally, you should rest one day between each resistance training session.
  • Don’t lift too heavy or too light. Lifting weights that are too heavy can cause you to get injured, and weights that are too light won’t challenge your body.
  • Use slow, controlled movements as opposed to rapid movements when you are doing resistance training exercises. When you lift fast you will be using momentum and not strength. That will sabotage your efforts.
  • Don’t let your routine get stagnant. Change it up a bit every few weeks so you’ll consistently see results. If you lift the same amount of weights and do the same number of reps every week, your muscles get bored and progression slows down.

If you really want to see those pounds melt away, combine a quality resistance training program with a sensible diet and plenty of cardiovascular exercise.

Do You Want To Know The Real Truth About Organic Foods?

Many people don’t know what organic food really is.  It seems like everywhere, “organic” is being promoted.  Are organic foods really worth your time and money?

Some people seem to be afraid of organic food. Could this be possible? Are people afraid that eating one bite of organic food is going to induct them into the organic food cult?

All organic means, is that the food or the product has been grown the way mother nature intended, naturally, without using chemicals, pesticides, herbicides and fungicides.

Some people are afraid of the price. Organic doesn’t always mean expensive. Most times  the price of the organic food versus the conventional food is only a few cents different, and some times the same price. Like the bag of organic carrots I bought today for my lunch, they were the exact same price as the conventional ones.

Given a choice, organic is the healthiest, safest way to go. So don’t be wary of the “organic” foods.

 

 

 

Fat Burning Pills – True or False?

Back when I was trying desperately to lose weight and getting totally frustrated at not seeing  any kind of results, I fell into the “quick fix” trap that I see people falling into now. I tried every extreme diet out there, including  resorting to dangerous fat burning pills…all in trying to drop even just a little bit of weight, I just didn’t want to be fat anymore.

Back then I didn’t understand how dangerous these pills were. I thought that because so many people were taking them, and they were sold at local stores, that they must be safe. Right? Absolutely NOT!!

The problem is, we want results and we want them NOW. Not only do we lack patience, but when we don’t see immediate results we give up, figuring it is impossible.

All I’m saying, is that if you want to lose weight fast, fat burners are NOT the answer. Period.

Just to list a few of the dangers…possible heart attack and/or damage to the heart, hormone imbalance, stroke, permanent (that is permanent) damage to your metabolism. But now many people are aware of the danger associated with these pills.

What you should know is, there are some “safe”, quick ways to get your fat burning engine cranked up and running. Healthy eating and exercise are always the answer. Sometimes though, we just need something to get the ball rolling.

Here are some tips to kind of jump start you on your way.

1. Completely Eliminate Wheat and Dairy for 2 weeks or more. Since most wheat and dairy products will cause an inflammatory response in your body, and make it really hard , sometimes impossible to see fat even budge off your body. Included in wheat products are  most breads, cereals, crackers, and pastas. Product that are dairy are milk, yogurt, sour cream, cheeses etc. Eggs are ok and butter is ok as well and will not stop the fat burning process.

2. Eliminate all grains for 2 weeks or more. Look I’m just telling you what works. Whether it is for some special event, or for the holidays, or you just want the pounds to come off faster, I highly suggest going “grain free” until you reach your desired weight. I’m not saying grains are unhealthy. I’m just saying fat loss will be more accelerated without them. Grains include millet, rice, oatmeal, quinoa and spelt. All healthy, yes, but if you go a  few weeks without them, it will help your body shed fat faster.

3. Add lemon to your water. Lemon works great to detoxify the liver. And because the liver is your “fat burning” organ, you want it always working at peak level. Keep your liver  clean, by not only eliminating processed foods and toxic substances from your eating plan but also by giving it a good cleaning with some fresh lemon. It will also help to add some cayenne pepper to your drink as well and that will help to get your bowels moving, because if the food is not finding its way out, weight loss will be much slower.

4. Eat your fruit servings before 4pm.  Another food group that I am not saying is “bad” but you may get increased fat loss results by eating your fruit with breakfast, mid morning snack and lunch and then sticking to veggies for your mid afternoon snack and dinner. Raw carrots and peppers are great with almond butter in the afternoon and a piece of salmon or steak over sautéed greens with a side salad is a good dinner. You’ll still get in your fruit for the day but will have had them much earlier in the day.

There are many different strategies and tips that you can try. You don’t need to resort to taking dangerous fat burning supplements. Try the above 4 steps and enjoy feeling and looking great.

Overeating Nutritious Food

“I wanted to see if I could actually GAIN unwanted body fat by eating as much food as I wanted for 6 weeks straight. My theory was that if you eat the right types of food and don’t stray from those foods, the body will automatically re-balance itself, even though you’re attempting to overeat.

I know the first reaction of many people is that I just must have a “fast metabolism” or something along those lines and that’s why I didn’t gain weight – But that is false!

The truth is that I have no problem at all gaining weight when I overeat on junk food or processed food in general. I can guarantee you that if I was overeating on those foods during the 6 weeks, I would have gained a massive amount of weight.

In fact, in the past I’ve easily gained as much as 10 lbs in only 1 week when I’ve been on some sort of vacation and simply ate the normal types of processed foods that everyone else was eating.

This proves that I’m just as prone to gaining weight as anybody else. Eating nutrient dense foods forces the body to readjust, just like I theorized. Not only that, but this is the type of eating that pretty much totally eliminates cravings…

You just cannot get fat when you make the right food choices and you just can’t help but burn fat off your body when you make the same great food choices. As I’ve mentioned before, I think one of the programs that gives some of the best guidelines for eating healthy and truly enjoying your food for lifelong success is the “Diet Solution Program”.

I Need to Lose Weight Really Fast – Should I Join a Gym?

Whenever anyone comes to me and says, “Isabel, I need to lose weight fast. Will joining a gym help me achieve my goals?” I just tell them that it’s about what works for your body because not two people are alike. Even though there are good reasons for joining a gym, there can be some drawbacks as well.

Reasons You May Want to Join a Gym

  • To get Motivated. People go to the gym for the same reason—to exercise. Being around people who are motivated, can motivate you to get your workouts done. If going to the gym will encourage you to exercise regularly, then do it.
  • Getting Away From Distractions At Home. There is always something that you need to do or someone who needs you at home. These distractions can get in the way of exercising. When you workout at the gym, the dishes, dinner, phone calls, laundry and anything else you “need” to do can just wait.
  • Access to Exercise Equipment and Fitness Classes. You don’t really need very much exercise equipment to get a good workout. But doing the same old exercises and running on the same old treadmill can get boring. When you workout in a gym, you have access to a wide variety of equipment and a variety of fitness classes, so you’re not likely to get bored.

Reasons You May Not Want to Join a Gym

  • You May Have To Sign A Contract. Plenty of people join a gym and actually use their membership. Others start off great and then fade away. If you are one of those that fade, and you’ve  signed a 12 month contract, you’ll be paying for a  long membership that you don’t use. So, it could be a waste of money.
  • Fees are Continuous. If your gym membership fees are collected via automatic bank draft, and you lose your job or run into financial hardships, there is no way to stop the gym from taking the money out of your account until your contract expires. If your finances are really tight, the money the gym takes out of your account can cause overdraft charges and other financial hardships.
  • Overcrowding. Gyms are in the business of making money. The more members they have, the more money they make. Most gyms can get pretty crowded, especially  during peak hours. If you don’t like crowds or are uncomfortable exercising around others, the gym experience may not be for you.
  • Equipment May Not Be Clean. Sweaty bodies and dirty hands means that the exercise equipment and locker rooms at gyms are probably not very clean and can be stomping grounds for germs. Anytime you come into contact with germy equipment, you become vulnerable to illnesses and infections. If you are a germaphobe or slack about hand washing, it may be better for you to exercise at home.

Some Ways to Combat Gym Drawbacks

Even though you don’t have to join a gym to lose weight, some people thrive in this type of setting. If you’re unsure if a gym is right for you, go to a gym and ask for a free trial membership. This will give you an opportunity to use the facility for a couple of weeks to see if joining is something you really want to do.

If you decide that a gym membership will work for you, then negotiate with the fitness club to save some money. Some gyms will waive their registration fees or give you a discount for as much as 30 percent off membership prices–all you have to do is ask.

If you really don’t like the idea of being in a contract, ask for a month to month membership. Most gyms don’t advertise the month to month thing because it eats into their profits. With this type of membership, you simply pay as you go. When you get tired of going, you can quit and it won’t cost any additional fees.

So check it out, see if it’s for you. Whatever gets you motivated to exercise is a good thing. Right?

“I just wanted to say thank you! Your program has worked great for me.
I am one of those people that has struggled with my weight all of my life. I remember in second grade my class did charts of everyone’s height and weight, and I weighed the most even back then! The only time in my life I was anywhere close to a healthy weight was in high school when I was playing soccer and we trained a couple hours a day, 6-7 days a week. When I went to college, what is the freshman 15 for most people was more like the freshman 40 for me. At my fattest (I think around sophomore year of college), I weighed in close to 200 pounds (I am only 5’ 4’’).
I have tried losing weight several times, but nothing seemed to work for very long. I’ve especially had problems dieting…whenever I cut calories, I get tired and cranky, and even if I lose any weight, it just comes right back. I’ve tried a variety of pills and shakes (none of them worked) and those stupid lean cuisine things always leave me hungry.
To make matters worse, I am a graduate student, and life is pretty stressful. My qualifying exam was in February of 2008, and I put on a TON of weight while preparing for it. I was eating a lot of fast food because had no time for anything else (was always studying), and I think the stress itself added a couple extra pounds. I actually had a nightmare where I woke up the morning of my qualifying exam and had to wear jeans because I was too fat to fit into my nice pair of dress pants! The other sort of wake-up call for me happened around the same time when my dad told me he was prediabetic, and I am EXACTLY like my dad, so I was really worried about becoming prediabetic too.
After passing my qualifying exam, I decided I really needed to do something about my weight (which at the time was about 190). “The first thing I’d like to do is say “thank you” to you for writing The Diet Solution Program. I had purchased Mike Geary’s “Truth About Abs” book and one of his emails pointed me in your direction. Much like many, many other people, I have struggled with my weight my entire life. My mom noticed before I could even talk that I LOVED food and since she had always struggled to stay thin, she attempted to “help” me through my youth and teen years, by joining me on the latest and greatest diet crazes. I would always lose the weight, and of course, would always put it back on. She did teach me the value of daily exercise, so I was never severely overweight, but there were times in my life when I was probably 30-40 pounds over my “ideal” weight. So, in the past few years, I’ve always felt like I could stand to lose at least 20 pounds, but adding more exercise never helped…it just made me more hungry and made me feel justified in eating more! Consequently, the weight never came off. I started your 6-week jumpstart guide in March of this year. In hindsight, I should have journaled more, but I’ve never been one to write things down. And I hate calorie counting!!! Anyway, it has been a (thankfully) slow process, but I have lost 18 pounds since then. I know the importance of taking weight off slowly…it means it’s more likely to stay off! I lost the first 12 pounds in 3 months while maintaining my same exercise routine of weight lifting and cardio (Mike Geary’s program). In May, I was introduced to a hot yoga routine taught at a local studio and decided to give it a try. I had been suffering with a painful IT band in my right leg for almost a year and thought it might be nice to take a break from the gym and work on healing my body. My dad, whose entire menu is determined by my mom, had gained 15 unwanted pounds over the past year, which, like me, he always struggles to take off and then puts it back on. He is a sweet tooth like me, too! About 2 months ago, my mom finally broke down and asked to read the book. Four years into my dialysis treatments (that’s 3x’s a week of 4 hour painful, hospital treatments-not a pleasant experience) I was finally called in for a kidney transplant. That was only half the battle. Now taking care of my new kidneys was entirely up to me. In all the time leading up to my transplant, I never followed through with my daughter’s nutritional suggestions. Here, perfect strangers were paying her hundreds of dollars for her nutrition advice, and I never believed I had the “will power” to do it. After my surgery, I made the choice to put my trust in my daughter’s nutrition plan instead of listening to the hospital dietitian. The hospital’s plan was almost the exact opposite of what Isabel was recommending, but based on her previous results with hundreds of clients, I knew that was the best choice for me.
The doctor warned me that the heavy steroids I was taking post-transplant would cause immediate weight gain (30-40 lbs in most people). To his surprise in the first 3 months after my surgery I lost 25 lbs and that was on the steroids. He said he never saw someone lose weight like this. My blood work was so great, he began to take me off my medications, one by one. First the blood pressure medication went, then the cholesterol medication went, and then the insulin was almost completely eliminated. Now, this is almost unheard of in a 65 year old diabetic who has undergone kidney transplant. Normally in these cases you are completely dependent on medication to keep your blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure under control.
Now one year later, I am 40 pounds lighter! The doctors tell me I’m a pure miracle. It’s no miracle, it’s my daughter’s nutrition plan! I have never felt better in my life. I have more energy now at 65 than I ever did at 30, 40 or 50. I am going to live every day like it’s my last and will not deviate from my incredible new eating regimen. It is possible to  put together a simple and healthy meal plan. It doesn’t have to be complicated. These meal plans show you how simple it can be to achieve your weight loss goals and feel better fast.

Breakfast

Even breakfast should include protein, so be sure to include cottage cheese, organic eggs, smoked fish, or raw nut butter as part of your breakfast. You should also include Carbohydrates such as oatmeal,fruit and vegetables or sprouted grain bread.

Your body has to have fat to survive, especially essential fatty acids. Your brain, immune system, digestion and hormones depend on this healthy fat. That is why people who go on very extreme low fat diets suffer from many health problems.

Omega 3 Fats

Omega 3 Fats are essential to human health but the body can’t produce it, which is why it is essential that we get these great fats from food. Some foods that are high in Omega 3 fats are leafy green vegetables,sardines, flax seeds, salmon, raw walnuts, organic eggs and grass fed beef.

Extensive research shows that omega-3 fatty acids reduce inflammation and help prevent risk factors associated with chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and arthritis. Cooking Oil

The only oil that is suitable for high heat cooking, and is one of the healthiest oils you can consume, is raw, organic, unrefined coconut oil. Have You Ever Starved Yourself Trying to Lose Weight?

The less food you eat, the more weight you’ll lose, right?  Well…no. If your idea of a good  diet plan for weight loss is nibbling on crackers and diuretics, you’re headed for disaster. Besides being downright miserable, a starvation diet can thwart your weight loss efforts and do some serious damage to your health.
Starving Slows the Fat Burning Process

Your body needs  the nutrients in real food, not saltines. When you starve yourself, it  kicks into starvation mode. When this happens, your metabolism will slow down and your body will hold on to stored fat in order to conserve energy.

Lean muscle mass needs more energy to function than fat. Basically, the more lean muscle you have, the more calories you’ll burn. If you continue to starve yourself, your body will feed on your lean muscle tissue and make it even harder for you to lose weight.

Obviously, if you starve yourself long enough, you’ll have no choice but to lose weight. But the weight loss won’t be healthy, and it will show in your appearance. You’ll become emaciated and your body will start to look like an old bag of bones (not joking).
Starvation Diet Results Are Short-Lived

The weight lost from starvation diets usually all comes back. Starvation slows your metabolism down. And it can take months for it to return to normal. As soon as you start eating again, you’ll likely gain all of the weight you lost back, plus a few extra pounds. In the end, you’ll wind up bigger than you were before you started starving. Most frequent dieters know of this fact.

When you go without food, you don’t get any of the essential nutrients needed for good health. In essence, your health will be a mess if you try to lose weight by starving. The worst part about it is that some of the health issues that arise from starvation diets can cause irreversible damage to your body and require long-term hospitalization or lifelong medical care.

I’m not trying to scare you, but if you plan to turn starvation into a lifestyle, you’ll end up in a body bag way before your time. Being skinny isn’t worth your life.

Don’t let the desperation to lose weight push you to go on a starvation diet. This type of diet can destroy your health and make weight loss harder to achieve. The healthiest way to drop unwanted pounds is to eat right, manage portion sizes and exercise.
